Jersey's 'Mrs Menopause' calls for permanent Gov adviser

Tuesday 25 April 2023

Jersey's ‘Mrs Menopause’ is hoping to bring back some "game-changing" facts from a Houses of Parliament conference today that will encourage Government to appoint a menopause adviser.

Trudi Roscouet, who recently won the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award for her campaign to raise awareness of how the menopause affects women in the workplace, is today attending the first anniversary celebration of the 'Menopause Mandate' at the Houses of Parliament.

Trudi was invited to the event by Carolyn Harris MP, the co-chair of the UK government's Menopause Taskforce, after she visited the Channel Islands last year.

"I am so excited to be attending this event," Trudi said. "The Mandate is a group of politicians, acitivists, celebrities and voices of like-minded people who want change in the government – and change in the perception of the menopause."

She added: "Jersey has never been on this kind of stage before, so I am immensely proud to be representing the islands. Hopefully, the Government will listen to the ideas and suggestions as to how they can improve the gender pay gap in the over-45s sector.

"This is our largest growing sector of the workforce and we need to retain it – apart from women being natural empathetic leaders, they also have a wealth of experience, and this needs to be retained."

"It's not just about 'older' women," Ms Roscouet further said. "It's also about women who may have gone into early menopause because of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) at the age of 30 or have been forced to have surgical menopause or even cancer treatments. We want to open up employers' minds and ensure that they understand how it affects women in the workplace and by allowing training and bringing a policy can have great employee benefits."

During the day, Ms Roscouet will also meet with the UK government's independent 'Menopause Employment Champion' who is looking at how menopause affects women in the workplace and how the implication of policy will help women feel protected.

She said: "She will be finding out from me how Jersey and Guernsey are embracing the menopause. I'm looking to bring back some game-changing facts to realise that all governments should have a menopause adviser on their wellbeing panel."
