A new culinary venture has opened its doors on Jersey's coastline promising a diverse menu, family-friendly atmosphere, and plenty of 'flavour'.

The Beach Hut, launched last month by restaurateur Elke Jacques, promises a blend of traditional and international cuisine.

The new eatery, which overlooks the beach on Victoria Avenue by First Tower, offers alfresco dining with beach and promenade seating.

"The perfect family vibe"

Ms Jacques, who has been in the hospitality industry for over a decade with her 'Flavour' brand, said the Beach Hut aims to bring "brand new beach tastes and bites" to locals and visitors alike.

"Our aim is to make this beach great again and create the perfect family vibe," she said.

Ms Jacques described the menu as a mix of "quintessential bacon rolls and burgers" alongside "unique and healthier world food delights" that cater to vegetarian and vegan diets.

Popular items include nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice), Korean street toast (a salty-sweet egg sandwich), and South Indian dosa (a thin crepe made with fermented rice and lentil batter).

"For the carnivore, we have a really tasty Lebanese shawarma and burger menu too," added Ms Jacques.

"Folk have commented that our burgers and bacon rolls are the best they've tasted!"

The Beach Hut also caters to various dietary requirements, including gluten-free options.

Ms Jacques said: "Just let us know, and we will create a special safe something for you."

Open seven days a week, with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays, The Beach Hut also hosts themed nights – including a popular Italian evening that recently sold out.

The venue is available for private bookings and collaborates with local wellness businesses for beach retreats and fitness classes.

The 'Flavour' journey

Ms Jacques' culinary journey began in 2009 when she launched Flavour.je to provide nutritious soup made from local and seasonal ingredients to various catering and retail outlets in the island.

Over the years, she ventured into different pop-up initiatives, such as a soup bar in the market in 2010 and a kiosk at Noirmont during the summer of 2013.

"The flavour gene"

Ms Jacques' said that she "inherited the flavour gene" from her restauranteur parents, Hannes and Joan, who owned Bistro Soleli during the 1980s, which has since become Mark Jordan.

"My passion for hospitality was inherited from my father and his mother who were in the industry," she said.

"I spent my time working [at the Bistro Soleli], mostly in the front of the house, and a little in the kitchen.

"A lot of the time was spent standing by the hot plate watching in awe how my father cooked without measuring, throwing delicious dishes together full of flavour and passion."

One of Elke's standout memories was observing her father expertly create enormous sheets of apple strudel or 'apfelstrudel' pastry.

"He was Austrian and never a tastier strudel to be had!" she said.
