It is likely that car passengers waiting for the ferry will be able to buy duty free goods from a dockside shipping container, after Ports of Jersey received the backing of Planning.
A modified container beside the vehicle lanes outside the Elizabeth Terminal will be used to display goods and allow passengers to place orders.
An empty shop within the terminal building will also be used to display goods for foot passengers.
Having passed through security, passengers will then pick up their items from another modified shipping container in the restricted zone before boarding their vessel.
Passengers will be able to buy goods either online or at the landside display unit, which will be behind the vehicle check-in cabins.
Ports says it may automate the payment method there. Passengers will then collect their goods, on production of a boarding pass, once they have passed through the security gate and random search area.
It is yet to be determined if goods will be delivered directly to vehicles, or passengers will have to go to a collection point.
A planning application was recently approved by the Planning Department, which concluded: “The proposal seeks to create moveable retail units out of shipping containers and locate them adjacent to the car lanes to the east and west of the Elizabeth Terminal.
“The proposed retail units are minor in scale and not considered to harm the amenities of the port.”
There were no formal public comments accompanying the planning application.
Ports still have to get licensing approval but hope that the shop will be open in time for the summer season.
If all approvals are received, the shop will be operated by Capi Duty Free Ports, which is part of the global B&S group. The company was awarded the contract after a tender process.
Documents submitted as part of the planning application sated that the facility would remain in place until the completion of the Harbour Master Plan, which is a long-term development plan beginning with the redevelopment of Elizabeth Harbour, before focusing on transforming Albert Pier, La Collette and Victoria Pier, the Old Harbours and La Folie, and New North Quay.

Last month, Ports took the first step forward in implementing those plans by applying to Planning to demolish the Elizabeth Terminal and replace it with a new curved building.
Then yesterday, Ports put forward plans to install a new L-shaped pontoon in the St. Helier Marina.
