Nigerian community set to gather for independence celebration

Friday 11 October 2024

Jersey's Nigerian community is set to come together this weekend for an event that marks 63 years of independence.

The celebration, called NaijaFest, will be held on Saturday 12 October at the St Helier Parish Hall.

Organiser Oluwasegun Alemeru described NaijaFest as "an annual celebration that brings together Nigerians and the wider community to enjoy the rich diversity of Nigeria's food, music, arts, and traditions".

The event, now in its third year, aims to showcase Nigerian culture while also supporting local causes.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to a local charity which will be decided after the event.

Visitors can look forward to a day filled with authentic Nigerian cuisine, live Afrobeats music and traditional performances, displays of Nigerian fashion, and interactive opportunities with artists and creators.

New additions this year include capacity development sessions, activities for children, and discussions with community groups like Friends of Africa and representatives from the Government.

"We're thrilled to see the event grow each year in terms of excitement and engagement,” said Mr Alemeru.

“We believe NaijaFest offers an excellent opportunity for the public to engage with Nigeria’s cultural heritage while contributing to a meaningful cause.

“Personally, I am very much looking forward to this year’s festival.

The team has worked hard to incorporate new features, and we’re feeling energised and optimistic about the impact it will have on attendees.”
