Friday 28 June 2024

There has been no gas detected in the area of a suspected explosion at Mont Pinel which left four people in hospital, according to Island Energy.

In a statement issued this morning, the energy supplier moved to reassure islanders that the area is "safe and secure".

Island Energy said: "Within the areas we were allowed to survey there was no gas escape detected on the evening of the incident and our teams returned last night to ensure that the area is safe and secure, and we continue to receive zero readings of gas in the area.

"Island Energy has not conducted any works in this area in the last two years and we want to reassure people that we have conducted all the relevant safety checks."

All emergency services were sent to Mont Pinel shortly before 23:00 on Wednesday night.

The road was closed to access after the incident and emergency services remained present in the area throughout Thursday.

The cause of the blast is yet to be confirmed.

Police said there was "significant damage to a property", and declared a "major incident".

This had since been stepped down, and officers last night moved into "recovery phase".

19 people were displaced, and two adults and two children were transported to the General Hospital for medical attention.

It's understood the family were rescued shortly before the front wall of the home collapsed. It left the children's room and bunkbeds exposed.

It was confirmed last night that the children – aged two and five – were "unharmed".

Their parents remain "stable" in hospital. Their injuries are said to be "non-life threatening or life-changing".

The two youngsters are "being supported", officers said.
