An islander has expressed his surprise after discovering a brown trout floundering in three-inch water the middle of a St Mary’s road.

Dennis Shore found the fish in Mourier Valley over the weekend.

Heavy rains and overflowing steams brought in by Storm Darragh turned Chemin des Hougue into a three-inch deep waterway.

In a post on social media, Dennis joked: "Not often you find a brown trout in the road on your afternoon walk!"

He explained that the stream had flooded, and the fish had taken a wrong turn onto the road instead of back to the stream.

Dennis managed to scoop up the fish, and his wife captured the unusual sight on camera before the trout was returned to its proper habitat.

He said: "It was obviously a fish, so I managed to get hold of it as it became stuck on the road.

"I only knew it was a brown trout once I got hold of it.

"I popped him back in and away he swam. Wonderful."

Storm Darragh prompted a red wind warning and caused disruption across the island, with Infrastructure teams working through Sunday night to clear 18 fallen trees and debris from main roads.

Damage was also reported at the Waterfront Horizon Development and Les Quennevais Sports Centre, whilst Jersey Electricity confirmed power outages in several areas.
