The latest rubbish idea from TTS

Monday 14 September 2015

One local artist or craftsperson will have a big job on their hands - recreating a piece of art out of old rubbish to encourage us all to recycle more.

TTS is on the hunt for someone to create an inspirational but practical art installation using up-cycled materials for the outside of the new Household Recycling Centre that's due to open late next year.

Recycling Manager Emma Richardson-Calladine said: “It’s a really good opportunity for us to practice what we preach and try to inspire others to use the site in different ways and re-thinking waste as a resource rather than rubbish.

“Instead of using new materials, the cladding will be used from waste materials – we’ve reclaimed all the timber that was used as rafters for the Jersey Pottery building in Gorey so that is available as well as anything else that people want to use.

“The use of upcycled materials – things that have served their purpose that could have a new lease of life –  will be an explicit message for our customers – it could have been thrown away but it’s gone on to have a new life.”

The artist or craftsperson with the best idea will be on site for about six weeks once construction is finished with a brief to: “Artistically demonstrate the value of upcycled materials to achieve a functional purpose, inspire visitors to the household recycling centre to think differently about waste and create a legacy of sustainable development.”

Mrs Richardson-Calladine said part of the department's long term strategy is to get us binning our old shopping habits and thinking more about what we are actually buying and how things can be re-used once we've finished with them.
