Numbers add up for Victoria College who take away maths title

Teenage mathematicians from Victoria College number-crunched their way to victory to win this year’s BWCI Channel Islands Maths Challenge.

Nathan Corrigan, Jonny Heward, Jack Searson and Patrick Claxton beat off stiff competition from 14 other Jersey and Guernsey secondary school teams to take home the trophy and will now go on to represent the Channel Islands in the national finals in London later this year.

The teams had to work together using logic and deduction to solve puzzles and problems throughout at the day at the event at the Town Hall which was sponsored by BWCI.

The company’s Business Development Manager Mike Freer said: “This event not only provides the most able mathematicians with some challenging problems to solve, it also helps them to develop the communication skills needed to work together efficiently as a team.

"As a Channel Island firm of actuaries and consultants it is great to see that the local pool of talented mathematicians remains high."

Guernsey Grammar School were this year’s runners-up.  Last year’s winners - Guernsey's Elizabeth College -finished in third place.

The competition is run by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) which aims to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The charity organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for secondary school pupils.

Last year more than 600,000 students from 4,000 schools took part in Britain's biggest national maths competitions.
