Silence, half-mast flags, vigil: how Jersey will pay tribute to those lost

Sunday 11 December 2022

The Bailiff has announced plans to pay tribute to those affected by the tragedies which have rocked Jersey this week, with a one minute silence, a request to fly all flags at half-mast, and a vigil service.

Sir Timothy Le Cocq has requested that the island-wide one minute silence take place on Monday 12 December at 11:00.

He said it will be, "...a moment when all islanders can pause together and reflect on the incidents that have resulted in loss of life."

Islanders are invited to use the silence as an opportunity to think of those affected by the Pier Road explosion, as well as the loved ones of the fishers lost when their trawler collided with a Condor freight ship on Thursday.

The search for survivors at the site of the Pier Road explosion which has claimed at least three lives has come to a close, and has now moved to a recovery operation.

As a further sign of respect, the Bailiff has requested that all flags are to be flown at half-mast from 08:00 Monday 12 December until sunset on Friday 23 December.

The Dean of Jersey, the Very Reverend Mike Keirle, will lead a vigil service on Wednesday for, "...the island to come together and reflect on the incidents of the week."

This service will take place at 18:00 on Wednesday 14 December at the Town Church. It will also be live-streamed and available for islanders to watch online.

The Town Church has a limited seating capacity for the public, and attendance will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Reserved seating will be provided for families and individuals related to these incidents who can contact the Chief Officer of the Bailiff's Chambers to reserve seating by email.

Sir Timothy has also created the Bailiff's Island Appeal which will aim to support individuals that have been affected by the recent events.

Details for individuals wishing to donate will be made available shortly and the fund will close on Friday 23 December.

Further information and an update on the appeal will now be provided this evening.
