Less than one week left to complete Summer Reading Challenge

Sunday 10 September 2023

Families have less than one week left to complete the Summer Reading Challenge and give their views on Jersey’s Children’s Library, with the challenge and the consultation both set to close on Saturday 16 September.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event for children aged 4-11 which encourages them to read books during the summer holidays. Over 2,000 local children have signed up to take part this year.

This year's challenge kicked off on Saturday 8 July with the theme of 'Ready, Set, Read!' as a celebration of reading, sport, games and play to encourage children to learn the key qualities in sport, such as teamwork, resilience, coordination and creative thinking.

Participants were challenged to read six books during the summer holidays. For each completed book, they receive a sticker – of which there are six to collect.

Those who complete the Summer Reading Challenge before Saturday 16 September will receive a medal, certificate and pass for a free swim at AquaSplash during a public swim session.

Saturday 16 September also marks the final day for islanders of all ages to share their views on how to make the children's section of Jersey Library a "welcoming, comfortable, and exciting space to engage with reading, books, and stories”.

The consultation, which opened on Thursday 3 August, asks islanders for their views on how the Children’s Library should look, as well as what activities and events it should offer.

The results of the survey will be shared later in the year both online, and at Jersey Library in child-friendly form, and Jersey Library will use the results to develop its services and facilities.
