Jersey schoolchildren are being offered the chance to pick up a new musical instrument and try it out.
The Jersey Music Service hope their two open evenings will inspire primary and secondary school students to learn how to play them properly.
Head of Jersey Music Service Graham Cox said: “Quite often when a young person takes up an instrument it’s one that’s been suggested to them rather than one that really inspires them. Sometimes they’ve just chosen an instrument because they don’t really know what else is available.
“We realised that young people need to be able to pick up a whole range of musical instruments and try them out for size. This will help them make an informed choice about what they would like to play and, hopefully, means it will be right for them.”
Music teachers will be on hand to show students how to play all the different instruments on offer from clarinets and flutes to guitars and saxophones and young musicians will also be there to explain what it’s like learning an instrument with the Service.
Dr Cox said: “We’ve never done this kind of event before but it should be a lot of fun for everyone involved, as well as being a really useful showcase for the musical instruments we can offer. Anyone can come along to find out more about brass, woodwind, strings, percussion or vocals.”
The free open evenings are being held on tonight and tomorrow at Hautlieu School from 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm and there is no need to book.
The Jersey Music Service runs extra music lessons in addition to what students learn in the classroom. It gives young Islanders the chance to join bands, orchestras and choirs with students from other schools.
