Co-op help tackle bike thefts

The police will be continuing their campaign to reduce bike thefts in the Island for at least the next three years after securing a new sponsorship deal.

They launched Operation Locknut earlier this year in an effort to get every bike in Jersey security marked and now the Channel Islands Co-operative Society is helping to share the cost.

Hundreds of bikes have already been registered this year on bikeregister.com and the Co-operative has pledged to donate £3,500 each year for the next three so that officers can continue to offer their free service.

Sergeant Paul Byrne said: “Our aim is to get every bike in the island security marked and registered on line, making life increasingly difficult for thieves.

“We have already been able to use the register when trying to reunite people with their bike so we would encourage everyone to either come to one of our events or pop in to the Enquiry Desk to get your bike marked.

“We are grateful to The Co-operative for supporting this worthwhile campaign which will only serve to drive crime down further on the island.

“The process takes five minutes and means if the worst should happen we can stand a better chance of reuniting you with your bike.

“As well as this we will be around to chat about how best to lock your bike, where to lock it and how to report your bike stolen if it does happen.”

The Society’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jim Plumley, said: “The Channel Islands Co-operative Society are delighted to support the States of Jersey Police with this very worthwhile free service to the Jersey community.”

There is still time to get your bike marked this year. You can either visit the Enquiry Desk at Police Headquarters or go along to one of these bike marking sessions:

Monday 29 October at Bel Royal from 5 pm until 6.30 pm;

Monday 10 November at West Park between 8 am and 9.30 am;

Wednesday 26 November at the Steam Clock from 5 pm until 6.30 pm;

Monday 8 December at West Park from 8 am until 9.30 am at West Park;

Wednesday 17 December at Bel Royal from 5 pm until 6.30 pm.
