Over £50million of taxpayers’ money goes to 5 private schools

Monday 07 November 2016

In the last ten years the States has given over £50m in grants to five private schools.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that five schools: Beaulieu Convent, De la Salle, FCJ, St George’s Preparatory and St Michael’s received grants totalling over £50m between 2006 and this year.

The FOI request showed that both Beaulieu and De La Salle received £20m during that ten-year period, while FCJ received £5.2m.

St George’s and St Michael’s no longer receive grant aid from the States. St George’s received £1.5m between 2006 and 2011, while St Michael’s received £3.1m between 2006 and 2015.

The FOI request asked what the funds are allocated to and the reply was: “...to support the schools in delivering the Jersey curriculum.”

It added that the amount provided is calculated on the number of pupils who attend the school.
