"Overwhelming" response to Father's Day stem cell donor plea

Wednesday 19 June 2024

Organisers have praised the "overwhelming" response to a Father's Day plea which resulted in over 70 islanders joining the stem cell donor list.

The Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan urged islanders to give up time over the weekend to potentially save the life of a local dad with blood cancer.

Tony Ferreira was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer in 2017.

The #Match4Tony event on Sunday was organised in the hope of finding a possible match for Mr Ferreira, who needs a stem cell transplant and has yet to find a suitable donor.

A total of 71 people visited Springfield Stadium to take a cheek swab and register themselves on the stem cell donor list.

Rozena Pedley of the Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan said: “We want to thank people for their overwhelming response and support.

“Kene, who allowed us to use Springfield Stadium Café for the event; the 71 people who registered and provided a cheek swab; others who simply came along to lend their support and encouragement."

“The family also want to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone.”
