The fate of a multi-million pound new sports facility will not be known until at least August after it was deferred from today’s Planning Applications Committee agenda.
The proposal to build a 22,600 square foot sports training facility on an undeveloped field at the Jersey Rugby Club site in St Peter was set to be discussed today.
However, Principal Planning Officer John Nicholson told the Bailiwick Express that the matter has been deferred at the request of the applicant, who will be away from the Island.
A new date for consideration is expected to be in August.
The proposed Jersey Sports Academy is to include gym space, a weights room, male and female changing areas, a nutritional zone and athletes’ lounge as well as classrooms, a medical area including hypoxic chambers and a three-lane, 40-metre sprint track. Plans also call for an additional parking area.
If approved, it is hoped the academy will assist in the development of Island athletes from 12 years of age to the elite level.
The application was submitted in April by former Jersey RFC director of rugby Ben Harvey, with financial backing from a group of local entrepreneurs.
Jersey RFC has fully supported the plans.
