Tweaks have been made to the design of Jersey’s new £800m ‘health campus’ in response to public feedback ahead of the planning application being published today.
Replacing both the General Hospital and St. Saviour mental health facilities, the new building at Overdale will combine acute and general care, surgery, mental health and training.
The Government said patient capacity will be greater than the current hospital and that there will be more operating theatres.

The planning application also contains proposals to set the buildings within landscaped gardens with woodland walks, and a plan for a new ‘highway’ – including a sustainable transport ‘corridor’ – leading up to the hospital.
860 new trees will be planted around the site and road, and a parking solution has been pledged for Pet’s Paradise at the end of Peirson Road following concerns expressed in an online petition.
Further changes in response to public feedback as part of the consultation process include reducing car parking numbers to 550 from 690 and remodelling the building to reduce its height and visual impact.

The proposed Mental Health Centre, which was due to be positioned at the top-left corner of the site, has been moved 5m to the west and away from the northern boundary in response to concerns regarding privacy and potential impact on the Grade 2 Listed Mont à l’Abbé Cemetery.
Based on input from clinicians as well as the public, the plans have been developed by Llewlyn Davis architects, who form part of the RoKFCC design and delivery partnership.
“We have today taken a significant step towards the delivery of our much-needed new hospital by reaching this important milestone in the project,” said Deputy Chief Minister Senator Lyndon Farnham, who was political responsibility for the project.

“During this process, we have not only ensured that the public have had every opportunity to offer their feedback and ideas, but importantly worked extremely closely with our healthcare professionals, who have used their medical expertise and experience to help us design a hospital for the future.
“The independent planning process will now begin and is expected to deliver a decision in early 2022. Subject to the application being approved, construction can then begin in time to meet the project timeline, which will see our new hospital complete and fully operational by the end of 2026.”
The full application will be available to view online once all documents have officially registered by the Planning Department.

The planning application process will entail a full public inquiry, allowing islanders and interested bodies to make submissions on all elements.
That inquiry is expected to take place in late spring, with permission hoped to be received in summer 2022, allowing construction to start straight after.
The first element of the construction process will focus on Westmount Road, enabling the wider project.
A decision on a separately submitted planning application to demolish existing buildings at Overdale is yet to be given.
