1960s celebration as Plat Douet marks half a century

Plat Douet School is celebrating its half-century anniversary this week in style - 1960s style, to be precise - with the culmination of a history project and several themed events.

First opened in 1968, the school has changed a lot since then, having undergone developments in 1997. But the school were keen to keep the spirit of the 60s alive in their special celebration week.

Classes have already produced 1960’s-themed displays and completed research on a range of aspects of the era, to celebrate the decade the school was open.

On 23 January, two past pupils - a former Headteacher’s son, Tim Herbert, and Martyn Maguire from Jersey Fire and Rescue - will lead a KS2 assembly about their memories of their time at Plat Douet and being a child in the 1960s.

This will be followed by over 15 former pupils speaking to small groups of current pupils about memories of Plat Douet and the differences between then and now.

The school has also been supported by Jersey Heritage who have kindly loaned some 1960 artefacts and display cases. These, alongside items from the era that have been lent by the community, will be displayed in a '1960 Plat Douet Museum'.

The week will be topped off with a 1960s dress-up day on Friday. Staff and pupils will show off the fashion from the 1960s in a whole school fashion parade and assembly.
