Dawn raid leaves Polish man facing extradition

Wednesday 18 July 2018

A man convicted of burglary and drugs offences in Poland has been arrested in a dawn raid in Jersey and now faces being sent back to serve time in prison.

The Magistrate’s Court was told that in 2007 and 2008 a Polish court gave 31-year-old Mateusz Pabian suspended sentences totalling 23 months for the offences. Under the terms of the sentences he wasn’t allowed to leave the country without permission.

It’s claimed he moved to the UK in 2009 without permission and that he later came to Jersey. There is no record of him having committed any offences in the island.

Explaining the procedure to Mr Pabian in the Magistrate's Court  yesterday, Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris noted that the morning’s events must have come as “something of a shock” to him, and that “a good many years have passed."

A special extradition hearing now has to be held within two months. A date’s been fixed for Thursday 16th August.
