Police called after headbutt at Guernsey boxing event

Tuesday 27 February 2024

Police are investigating after a reported assault at a Guernsey boxing event – in the audience.

The Guernsey Amalgamated Boxing Club hosted the open event with local athletes competing against visitors from Liverpool at Beau Sejour on Saturday night.

While the bouts were taking place inside the ring, police said an assault took place in the audience area at around 20:00.

One man was allegedly headbutted by another. Event security dealt with the incident as it occurred.

Commenting on the alleged assault the club wrote: "We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the security staff who intervened immediately on the night to bring the matter to a swift close by evicting those involved, thus causing minimum disruption to others in attendance."

The club added: "...This was a family fundraising event with many children present and as such we were deeply saddened to hear of such unnecessary behaviour.

"Our sport is one of discipline and respect and we absolutely do not condone violence such as this."
