Portraits of artists on display at Maison de la Normandie

Sunday 15 April 2018

A new exhibition at the Maison de la Normandie is giving a rare insight into the life of 25 artists with a series of photographs taken by Jean Yves Desfoux, a photographer from Granville (Normandy), in the intimacy of their workshops and exhibition galleries.

The "Granville: Portrait Gallery of Artists" exhibition, opening on 17 April, features 62 art works, including 25 paintings, 12 sculptures and the 25 portraits of artists.

During the official opening of the exhibition, on 17 April, the artists will be in Jersey to present their work and contribute to weave links between Normandy and the Channel Islands. The aim is to bring communities together and contribute in creating economic links between the two entities.

It is hoped this "Première" should allow new artistic projects to come to light and strengthen artistic and cultural exchanges between La Manche and Jersey

Jean Yves Desfoux, a photographer from Granville, met 25 artists living and working in Granville to photograph them in their workshops. Each 60 x 90cm picture shows the artist in his/her world of creation, workshop or gallery in a bid to showcase the artistic and creative wealth and diversity of Granville.

During the summer of 2017, the photos were exhibited in a gallery in Granville and put together in a book called "Granville: Portraits d'Artistes." Both the exhibition and the book were so successful that Jean Yves Desfoux thought this work should live on and be "exported", enlarged to encompass, this time, the works of many other fellow artists.

Besides the portraits, 12 artists will exhibit their work. This will include landscape paintings, sculptures made from materials recovered from junk yards as well as sketches, acrylic paintings and watercolours among others.

It is hoped the exhibition will also help give Granville and the County of La Manche a wider audience in Jersey and help show the variety of the artist scene.
