Ports of Jersey has signed up to a European pledge to work towards net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
The Toulouse Declaration was launched by the French Presidency to the European Union on Friday 4 February 2022.
Ports of Jersey is one of the 77 airport operators that initially came out in support of the treaty when it was set out in June 2019, and which has now committed to the agreement that looks to produce “structured dialogue and concrete policy action” towards the transition to a “decarbonised future”.
ASD, which represents the European aeronautics, space, defence, and security industries, described the Toulouse Declaration as a “true breakthrough” and the “first joint initiative of its kind globally”. The declaration is endorsed by Destination 2050, a decarbonisation roadmap that was launched by Europe’s five leading aviation associations in 2021.
Ports CEO Matt Thomas commented: “The aviation industry has an important role to play in tackling global climate issues.
"By signing up to this joint initiative, Ports of Jersey is demonstrating our commitment and passion to leading the way in taking on these issues with our Toulouse Declaration partners, to succeed together."
He added: "Each and every airport must play their part and ensure they are making a difference. We are looking forward to sharing our sustainability strategy in March 2022, which will clearly outline the measures we will be taking as a business over the next 10 years for the benefit of our people, our community, our Island and our planet."
