Eco team go 'potty' for mugs to cut takeaway waste

Wednesday 08 February 2023

A community organisation which aims to recycle pots of all sizes bound for the incinerator has officially expanded into mugs.

Launched in April 2021, Potty Eco Pots is an initiative enabling islanders to drop old plant pots that they no longer need at a collection point where others can pick them up to use, all free of charge.

The pair work alongside the La Collette Household Reuse and Recycling Centre to save upwards of 6,000 pots a month from the incinerator.

Now Potty Eco Pots are expanding their operation into mugs, aiming to set up mug reuse facilities in all the cafés in Jersey to cut down on the number of takeaway cups going to waste.

The initiative will see cafés put out a basket where islanders can leave their unwanted mugs, which can then be used by customers who order a takeaway drink in place of the disposable paper cups.

So far, The Lounge Cafe in on Burrard street, Rhona's in Gorey, Four Bakery on Bath Street and the Breakwater Cafe in St. Catherine's have all adopted the scheme, with baskets outside each cafe ready and waiting to recieve any unwanted mugs for people to takeaway.

Cafés or establishments wishing to join the reuse mug revolution in Jersey are invited to contact Potty Eco Pots on Facebook HERE.
