Young islanders warm up for Dance World Cup

Saturday 24 June 2023

With a few weeks to go until the competition begins, 50 of Jersey’s young dancers are looking forward to jeté-ing off to Braga in Portugal to compete on the world stage.

The Dance World Cup has come on leap and bounds since its conception in 2004, and has grown from just 18 participating countries – as was the case when Jersey hosted the competition in 2009 – to a staggering 65 taking part in Portugal this year.

Four dance schools from the island will see their students have a final dress rehearsal on 25 June, including Jarn-Marie Couley’s JM Dance Studios – whose dancers make up 39 of the 50 young islanders representing Jersey in the competition.

Dancers from Étoile Studios, Jersey Academy of Dancing, and Jodie Lee Performing Arts Academy make up the rest of Team Jersey.

Speaking on the games, JM Dance Studios’ Principal hailed the competition “a good experience”, and one that she is looking forward to, as it is “such an opportunity for young dancers".

Miss Couley said:"Our youngest [student] is five years old and we have dancers going that are 19, so it’s a good age range.”

There will be a variety of performances to enjoy, with contemporary, commercial and acro routines alongside many other genres.

Both individual and group performances are scheduled, with Team Jersey competing against countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America.

The pupils of all dance schools have been raising money recently in order to fund their trip, and will be in Braga from the 25 June up until the competition ends on 8 July.

All performances that are taking place will be broadcast live on the Dance World Cup website.

They will begin on 30 June and can be accessed after purchasing a pass.
