Underwater robots were tested in the pool at Langford Sports Centre yesterday as teams from several primary schools took part in a competition organised by Ports of Jersey.
Year 6 pupils from six schools put their Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to the test, facing a range of challenges, including an obstacle course and speed trial.
The contest is the culmination of six weeks' work as part of an international programme launched by SeaPerch and RoboNation and supported annually by technical experts at Ports of Jersey.
This is the first year primary school students have taken part in the SeaPerch programme, which was previously exclusively for secondary school students.
Ahead of yesterday's event, Ports of Jersey head of engineering Julie Acey said she was "looking forward to seeing how the younger cohort of students competing this year cope with the challenges we've set them".
She added: "We hope that this competition supports future talent by sparking an interest in STEM subjects. And of course it's always lots of fun on competition day."
Skills Jersey senior advisor Dave Roworth added: "We are delighted to have our younger learners involved in this annual competition for the first time.
"Raising aspirations at an early age leads to ambitious students who are informed about career opportunities and motivated to follow in the footsteps of the wonderful professionals they have been meeting from Ports of Jersey."
