A local charity has launched its “biggest-ever” campaign, which encourages islanders to learn more about their brain health and make simple lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of dementia.

Dementia Jersey's 'Boost Your Brain' initiative aims promote regular exercise, a healthy diet, socialising and not smoking to reduce the risk of dementia.

Islanders are being invited to take the charity’s Brain Health Quiz to find out how to reduce their own personal risk of the disease.

The wider Boost Your Brain campaign has three areas of focus – Love your Heart, Stay Sharp and Keep Connected – which are designed to encourage islanders to stay social, inquisitive and active in mid-life.

In a statement, Dementia Jersey said: “Simple lifestyle changes such as exercising your mind and body and staying socially connected can make a significant difference.”

Boost Your Brain, which is based on a similar campaign by Alzheimer’s Research UK, is being supported by Public Health.

The charity noted that while not all risk factors for dementia can be modified, many can, meaning that changes made in mid-life could have a significant impact.

Dementia Jersey CEO Claudine Snape said: “A generous benefactor has allowed us to boost this campaign with a variety of creative tactics which will hopefully capture people’s imagination and get them taking action to reduce their risk [of dementia].

“This is the biggest campaign we’ve ever run, but the message that it’s possible to reduce your risk of dementia is so important that we need to think big.

That’s one of the reasons we’re so pleased to be partnering with Public Health on this campaign.”

Public Health director Professor Peter Bradley added: “Prevention is one of the priorities that underpins much of our work, and I’m delighted to see Dementia Jersey lead this campaign, which has prevention at its core.

“The campaign’s focus is on encouraging islanders to make simple changes now, to dramatically reduce their risk of dementia in the future.

However, these changes will also help to prevent other health conditions experienced by islanders.

I encourage all islanders to get behind this campaign to improve their health both now and into the future.”

As part of the campaign, information is now visible on tree planters around Liberty Wharf and the International Finance Centre as well as on the back of buses.

Leaflets are also available in GP surgeries and the charity will have information stalls at Charing Cross on 28 and 29 January.
