A Jersey-based reality TV star who once praised the island for its low crime rates has been fined £1,500 after admitting giving a man the middle finger in a coffee shop – and then spitting in his face.

Jane Mary Rayner (59), who featured in The Real Housewives of Jersey on ITVBe last year, pleaded guilty to the assault in the Magistrate's Court yesterday.

St. Helier Centenier Paul Huelin told the Magistrate's Court that the the victim had been inside Cooper & Co coffee shop in Castle Quay, working on his laptop, when Rayner walked past.

The reality star gestured at him with her middle finger and Mr Huelin said: "Then she entered the coffee shop and gave him verbal abuse.

"She deliberately spat in his face. It landed on his face and glasses."

In an interview before the series was first broadcast in December 2020, Rayner was asked what she liked most about Jersey, and said: "There is hardly any crime and the people here are very friendly."

Advocate Paul Nicholls, defending, said there had already been acrimony between Rayner and the victim.

He explained: "She has said previously that he intimidated her."

He added: "She is profoundly sorry and embarrassed by her action. It was an incident out of character."

He suggested that the offence could be dealt with by "a simple fine" and Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu agreed.

He told Rayner: "Even if you and the victim are in some disagreement, it does not justify you going into a shop and spitting."
