We’ve all been saying we’d do more to sort out our rubbish if it was easier to do it and now there are plans to bring kerbside recycling right to your door.
Transport and Technical Services are working with the parishes to roll the scheme out to homes across the Island.
St John, St Lawrence, Trinity, St Mary and most of St Helier already have kerbside collections for paper and plastics and St Brelade is starting their collections in the New Year.
TTS Recycling Manager Emma Richardson-Calladine said: “We use the results of the Annual social survey and one of the things we keep finding is that people would recycle more with a kerbside recycling scheme. Research is that the absence of kerbside recycling is a real barrier.
"There is a real positive will within the parishes to make this happen so we’ll be going back to the other six parishes to look at a good timeframe for them.”
But sorting out all our rubbish takes time and she says it’s not likely that all the Island’s parishes will be kerbside recycling by the end of next year because every parish is different and may need a year to work out their recycling rounds.
She said: "Every parish has its own nooks and crannies and that local knowledge for each parish is really valuable so that all the waste can be collected really efficiently and we need to work closely with the contractor to make sure the scheme is right for the parish. We want consistency in what materials are collected across the Island."
The cost of collection will continue to come from the parish rates we pay.
