ROYAL VISIT: How will buses, roads and parking be affected?

Friday 12 July 2024

With the Royal visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla just days away, officials have released details about how access and parking will be affected on the day.

Details of the itinerary of the visit on Monday 15 July can be found here, and you can find out more about road closures, parking restrictions, disability measures, bus and taxi changes, and hospital access below...

Which roads will be closed?

From 06:00 to 18:00, all roads adjacent to the Royal Square, Weighbridge Place and Liberation Square will be closed.

From, 11:00, the roads around the Parade will be closed so islanders can visit the “family zone” at the Don Monument.

From 12:00, St Aubin’s Road will be closed until events at People's Park are over and members of the public have left the area.

Throughout the day, aastbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane of the Esplanade and La Route de la Liberation during the day.

The tunnel will close for around one hour in the afternoon, with traffic diverted to Mount Bingham at this time.

The closures are being managed by the St Helier Honorary Police, and motorists are asked to be patient on the day and allow extra time for travel.

What parking measures have been taken?

From 18:00 on Saturday 13 July, on-street parking will be suspended in the following places:

  • People’s Park

  • St Aubin’s Road

  • Cheapside

  • The Parade (excluding emergency parking)

  • Charing Cross

  • Broad Street

  • New Street

  • Library Place

  • The Weighbridge

  • The Esplanade

  • Pier Road

  • Grenville Street

  • New North Quay

What accessibility measures are in place?

In addition to the usual provision of floors 1 and 2, floor 3 of Sand Street will be allocated as additional Disabled Parking.

Shopmobility, which would normally close on bank holidays, is opening for the special occasion on Monday from 09:00 for anyone who needs a wheelchair or mobility scooter to be able to see their Majesties.

Shopmobility asks that anyone who requires one calls (01534 739672) or emails Edward Trevor (edward@shopmobility.org.je) in advance to ensure they have sufficient numbers.

How will the buses and taxis be affected?

With events happening around Liberation Square and the Liberation Station, there will be a temporary bus station operating from the Esplanade from 10:00. Staff from Liberty Bus will be on hand to guide islanders in the right direction.

Library Place and the Weighbridge taxi ranks will be closed, and two temporary ranks will instead operate from the Steam Clock and on Grenville Street.

Can I still get to the hospital?

Emergency access to the hospital will be maintained throughout. Patriotic Street Car Park can be accessed via the Esplanade or from Gloucester Street.

The Hospital Pharmacy will be closed to the public on Monday, and anyone who needs to collect prescriptions before the Bank Holiday is asked to call the Hospital Pharmacy in advance on 442627 for confirmation that they have received the prescription and when it will be ready for collection. The busiest times are expected to be between 12pm and 2pm. The Pharmacy is open on weekdays between 9am and 5pm.
