Russian athlete Aleksey Troskin knocked almost six minutes off last year’s course record to win the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon 2014
Running only his third marathon, Troskin crossed the finish line at the Weighbridge in 2 hours, 18.31 minutes.
Tomas Abyo from Salford, who won the 2012 Jersey Marathon and set a previous course record, was second. Last year’s winner, and the current Guernsey Marathon champion, Kenyan Reuban Chumba came in third.
Troskin, who was the clear leader over the last 12 kilometres, said he was happy to win. Speaking in broken English seconds after breaking the tape, the breathless 28-year-old runner, said: ‘Very good, good race, good weather!”
The first Jersey runner to finish was Bruno Franciso in a time of 2 hours, 46.15 minutes, knocking five minutes off his personal best.
He said: “I was absolutely exhausted. The second half I was dying and I just wanted to finish. Great race, great support out there – I am just glad to be finished.”
The Women’s Race was won by London-based Ethiopian Getenesh Tamirat in a time of 2 hours, 47.4 minutes. The diminutive runner finished sixth overall, with only five men crossing the line ahead of her. Russia’s Yulia Vinokurova came second in 2 hours, 53.12 seconds, and Edna Kimutai of Kenya was third with a time of 2 hours, 53.
More than 400 runners – including a man dressed as an orang utan - set off from the Weighbride at 9 am plus hundreds more took part in the Mourant Ozannes Relay Race and the 3K Fun Run sponsored by the Jersey Evening Post, to raise money for the event’s chosen charity, Diabetes Jersey, and other local good causes.
The Jersey Marathon, which has grown in popularity over its nine years, attracted elite athletes and amateur runners from the UK and overseas.
