Sea-themed art exhibition to raise money for RNLI

Thursday 26 September 2024

A local artist is raising money for RNLI Jersey in a new exhibition created to mark the charity's 200th anniversary celebrations.

Rosemary Blackmore will be donating 25% of all profits made in her sea-themed painting and ceramic exhibition to the charity.

The exhibition – entitled 'Adrift' – will be open to the public from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 October at the Atlantic Hotel.

All artwork on display will be for sale.

Rosemary explained that she chose to raise money for the RNLI as it is a charity close to her heart.

"It means so much to me," she said. "I’ve got a relative who volunteers on the St Catherine’s lifeboat and I just think how brave and wonderful [the volunteers] all are."

A print depicting an RNLI lifeboat titled 'They're Here!' has been created especially for the exhibition.

One of Rosemary's other paintings 'Atlantic Coast' will also be auctioned at a preview evening of the exhibition, with 100% of the highest bid donated to charity.

She hopes bids for the painting – which depicts the view over St Ouen's Bay – will surpass £1,000, which is what she would usually sell a piece of this size for.

"I wanted it to be bright, colourful, a statement piece, and for people to recognise where it was,” she said.

Although she has always loved painting the sea, Rosemary explained that she pushed herself out of her comfort zone for this special exhibition.

"I wanted to look at the water’s edge and the energy of the tide," she said.

"Usually in paintings like this, the tide is horizontal and two-thirds of the way down is the sand. It was important for me that the water went up the canvas in this piece."

'Adrift' will be opened by Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd on Wednesday 2 October. The art will be available for the public to view from 10:00 until 17:00 each day thereafter.

Only invited guests will be able to bid for 'Atlantic Coast' during the auction on the preview evening, but prior bids can be sent to auctioneer Simon Drieu.

Other events held to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the RNLI have so far included a commemorative flower bed in Howard Davis Park and a grand flotilla of over 100 boats.
