Overnight air and sea search for missing islander

Monday 12 April 2021

The search for an islander who went missing over the weekend is continuing today after extensive overnight air and sea searches.

32-year-old Mateusz Ruszczyk was last seen at his St. John home at 09:00 on Saturday. Last night, the search focused on the island's south-west coastline, between Noirmont and Corbière.

It involved police officers as well as the Channel Island Air Search aircraft, the RNLI all-weather and inshore lifeboats, and the Jersey Lifeboat Association.

Islanders who might have seen Mr Ruszczyk or have any information about him are asked to call the police on 612612.

He was believed to have been driving a black saloon-style Volvo, registered J44129. It was found parked outside La Moye prison around 09:30 on Saturday morning. Anyone who was in the area at that time is asked to get in touch.

Today, the Channel Islands Air Search aircraft Lions’ Pride was due to resume its search, after being stood down early this morning.

Reporting on its activities last night, a spokesperson for the voluntary organisation said: “The aircraft was called out last night to help Jersey Police with the search for a missing person.

“The aircraft took off from Guernsey at 23:11 and, in coordination with the Jersey Coastguard, concentrated its thermal camera search from an altitude of 2,000 feet in the area between the Corbière Lighthouse and Noirmont.

“During the flight, we were asked to perform a coastline search as far as St. Catherine’s Breakwater before returning to the original area for a more saturated search of the land area above the cliffs.

“The aircraft landed back in Guernsey at 01:52 when all the assets were stood down for the night.”
