Second phase of flood defence work starts

Sunday 04 March 2018

Work is starting tomorrow on the flood defence work along from the Gunsite, with 120 metres of sea wall to be raised by 0.3 metres from the east of Le Perquage car park towards town.

The first part of the project, which aims to help combat flooding during storms and high spring tides, saw the sea wall being raised from the Gunsite to Beaumont last July.

The DfI will repeat the height and shape on the wall built last year on the new section.  A special curve design was used on the sea side in a bid to help to deflect waves. The wall was tested in the January storms with DfI releasing photos showing how the water coming up to the sea wall was being turned back on the newly built section of wall at the Gunsite, as pictured.

The project, is expected to last 13 weeks, and DfI explained that it's being undertaken at this time of the year so it can be completed by the summer months.

During construction, the space available to promenade users will be limited.

Announcing the start of the works last summer, Deputy Eddie Noel, the Infrastructure Minister, said: "The residents of the Gunsite and Beaumont area have suffered, particularly in recent years, from flooding which has caused distress and property damage. I am pleased that we will soon be able to deliver this project which will considerably improve the situation for them.”
