Second Reform Jersey candidate to face Royal Court

Monday 23 April 2018

A second Reform Jersey candidate has been referred to the Attorney General regarding their nomination paper.

Sarah Westwater, who is standing for Deputy in St. Lawrence, will attend the Royal Court this Thursday at 10:00.

The Law Officer’s Department have not confirmed the exact nature of the referral.

It comes less than a week after the party’s candidate for St. Brelade Constable, Marilyn Carré, withdrew from running after being threatened with a Royal Court hearing.

It was alleged that her nominators may not have been aware that she was endorsed by Reform Jersey – a claim the party denied.

The Court heard last week, however, that she would have been allowed to continue her campaign for the role had her proposer and seconders agreed before the presiding Commissioner that they were aware of her ties to the party.

But her withdrawal meant that the Court was instead left to consider whether to open nominations. They decided against the move, and her only opposition, Mr Mike Jackson, who previously held the role, was elected unopposed. He will be sworn in on 1 June.

Express has contacted Reform Jersey for comment.
