Showers closed at Les Quennevais Sports Centre due to water quality issue

Monday 09 September 2024

Showers at Les Quennevais Sports Centre could be closed until the end of September due to “unsatisfactory” water quality test results.

The closure is expected to last around three weeks, depending on the results of the new tests, and comes after refurbishment work on the changing rooms took place over the summer.

Announcing the closure on Friday, Active Jersey advised customers to shower elsewhere until the water is treated and retested.

The Infrastructure Department confirmed that "low counts" of the legionella species of bacteria were found in some of the water samples from the showers during the routine testing required after refurbishment works.

Management confirmed that sinks and water fountains are unaffected by the issue and that all scheduled activities will continue as planned.

The statement explained: ”We regret to advise that some sample results were unsatisfactory and as a precaution all showers in the main building will need to remain closed whilst they are treated and new samples taken and analysed."

Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan added: “Following the minor refurbishment of the ladies' wet changing room at Les Quennevais Sports Centre, routine water samples were taken from the shower outlets on completion of the works to ensure the water quality was satisfactory in preparation for reopening to the public.

“The sample results from some showers gave results that were unsatisfactory and as a precaution, all showers in the main building will remain closed whilst a chemical flush disinfection is completed and new samples analysed."

The issue follows a series of maintenance works at the St Brelade facility in recent months, including repairs to steel columns, electrical upgrades, and refurbishment of the pool changing rooms.

The swimming pools were closed from 15 July to 2 September for the roof repairs, while the first-floor gym and spinning room were shut from 22 July to 5 August for electrical work, and in April, the entire building was temporarily closed due to power supply issues.
