Sinkhole in St Helier creates "unstable" building and closes roads

Wednesday 18 December 2024

A burst water main has created a sinkhole in St Helier – with "significant cracks" appearing in the walls of an "unstable" building.

Parts of the St Helier ring road, Clarendon Road and La Pouquelaye are currently closed due to the incident at the bottom of La Pouquelaye.

Jersey Fire & Rescue Service confirmed that a burst water main has created a sinkhole underneath the road.

"Significant cracks have appeared in the walls of the building that makes the corner of Clarendon Road, and Rouge Bouillon," the emergency service said.

Building control will determine whether or not the property is safe.

Jersey Water has confirmed that both lanes between Midvale Road and Palmyra Road will be closed for the rest of the day at least.

Diversions are in place, but islanders are being asked to avoid the area.

School collections at D'Auvergne and Janvrin are likely to be impacted.
