FULL LIST: Souper menu revealed for annual shelter fundraiser

Friday 29 November 2019

Ladle up! The annual Soup Kitchen is back on Tuesday to raise money for the Shelter Trust and the list of the 44 different soups that will be served up on the Royal Square has been revealed.

Now in its 21st year, the annual fundraiser will take place on 3 December between 10:30 and 14:00 in the Royal Square.

Those wishing to sample the tasty soups are invited to make a minimum donation of £3, which includes bread.

Over the past two decades the fundraiser has raised nearly £165,000 for the Shelter Trust, which supports homeless people in the community.

So far this year, the Shelter Trust has helped 458 islanders and the demand for their services is as great as ever.

This year’s menu includes classics such as ‘Leek and Potato’, ‘Goulash’ and ‘Spiced Pumpkin’, as well as more exotic recipes that are sure to make islanders travel in their lunch break, including ‘West African Sweet Potato and Peanut’, ‘Mexican Bean with Rice’ and ‘Red Thai Chicken’.

Once again, local restaurants, hotels and catering companies have taken the time to cook up a storm, along with Government House, which has concocted a ‘Bacon, Celery and Stilton’ mix; Jersey College for Girls with a ‘Lightly Spiced Lentil and Tomato Soup’; the Catholic Church with a ‘Spicy Nigerian Sweet Potato’; and the Shelter Trust itself, which is offering ‘Jerk Turkey, Yam and Dumplings’.

Seven vegetarian, including five vegan, and several gluten-free soups will also be available.

Local bakeries are also supporting the event and will be donating French bread to dunk into the soup.

To celebrate the Soup Kitchen’s 21st anniversary, LGT Vestra Jersey, which has sponsored the event for the past three years, will be handing out commemorative 21st birthday cupcakes to the first 1,000 soup buyers.

Last year, over £14,000 was taken on the day in just a few hours thanks to a "huge band of volunteers", which included LGT Vestra employees and many well-known local faces and chefs.

Among this year's soup-serving volunteers will be Lady Dalton, wife of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor. Meanwhile, Crown Officers and all States Members have been invited to come to the Square for lunch.

Once again, there will be music and carol singing and a big marquee to protect the tasty soups and their buyers in case of bad weather.

The organising team said they hope this year's Soup Kitchen will be "as great a success as in previous years" and asked for the public’s continued support.

With around 4,000 mugs of the warm lunch treat being served every year, islanders are encouraged to pick three recipes that appeal to them to avoid disappointment.
