St. Helier Deputy passes away

Thursday 15 November 2018

A well-known and much-loved St. Helier Deputy has died after a "courageous battle" with cancer.

Deputy Richard Rondel passed away at the Jersey Hospice last night aged 54 years old.

Managing Director of Pitcher & Le Quesne Funeral Directors, Paul Battrick, made the following statement announcing the popular Deputy’s death: “It’s with great sadness this morning to announce that Richard Rondel passed away last night… in the tender care of Jersey Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

The St. Helier Deputy leaves behind three young sons, Jack, James and Joshua Rondel, who completed a 36-mile island walk on their father's behalf to raise money for the charities who have cared for him during his illness.

Deputy Rondel was also honoured at this morning’s Planning Committee meeting with a minute’s silence as a long-serving member of the States and of the Planning panel. The flag at the Town Hall is also flying half-mast today as a mark of respect for Deputy Rondel.

Despite his worsening illness, Deputy Rondel was dedicated to the end – having attended last week’s States Assembly. Tributes for Deputy Rondel have already started pouring in on social media.

The popular politician and member of the island’s community will be sadly missed by his family, colleagues, friends and constituents.
