Suspension on German imports amid foot and mouth outbreak

Thursday 23 January 2025

Animal product imports from Germany have been banned in a bid to protect the island's livestock following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the country.

The ban came into force today and there are no known cases of the disease in Jersey, the States vet confirmed.

Foot and mouth disease is not a risk to humans.

However, it is a severe contagious viral disease in livestock with cloven hooves, including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.

Following the reported outbreak in German livestock, islanders cannot bring fresh meat, meat products, milk, milk products, and animal by-products from the above species into Jersey for personal consumption – including those that are commercially produced and packaged.

An import ban is also in force in the UK, which announced a commercial ban on German animal products earlier this month.

A statement from the Infrastructure and Environment Department said that Jersey's animal health and welfare team continued to monitor the situation in Germany to determine if any further restrictions would be necessary.

ADVICE...

Islanders are being advised that they can only bring certain products of susceptible animals into Jersey in personal luggage or via post.

Products can only originate from the EU, EFTA states, the Faroe Islands and Greenland and must comply with the following conditions:

  • have been produced and packaged to EU commercial standards, and weigh no more than 2kg per person
  • bear an identification or health mark (or commercial labelling if it is an animal by-product) to evidence it is commercially produced
