Summer of '69 legend Bryan Adams has run to praise Jersey politicians for publicly condemning a Faroese tradition which sees thousands of sea mammals slaughtered every year.
The Grindadrap is a Faroese practice which may date back as far as the 9th century.
It occurs in the spring and summer periods, and sees whales, dolphins and porpoises driven into shallow bays where they are beached, killed and butchered. The meat is subsequently distributed to the Faroese community.
Following a proposal brought by Deputy Lyndon Farnham, States Members this week officially voted to condemn the practice – and to ask the Chief Minister to write to the UK and Faroe Islands to "communicate the view of the States Assembly to the United Kingdom Government and the Government of the Faroe Islands.”
Although she did not vote to support the idea, and nor did any of her Ministers, Chief Minister Kristina Moore agreed to carry out the States Assembly's wish.
Following the vote, Bryan Adams – who was previously rumoured to be considering a move to Jersey after being spotted on the island's roads – tweeted in support of the condemnation.
He posted on Twitter: "Full credit to the island of Jersey's Parliament for speaking out against the Faroe Islands mass whale and dolphin slaughter.
"Other parliaments and governments around the world should speak out against this senseless and unnecessary slaughter too. #savethewhales"
