A Summer Holiday? Cliff Richard visits the Jersey War Tunnels

Thursday 27 June 2024

The Jersey War Tunnels has a longstanding reputation as one of the island's most popular attractions, having drawn countless islanders and tourists through its doors over the years – now including a recent visit from one of the most successful British singers of all time...

Followers of the War Tunnels' social media pages might have done a double-take this afternoon after the attraction revealed that none other than Sir Cliff Richard, OBE, had stopped by.

The globally-recognised 'Man of Mystery' has sold more than 21 million singles in the United Kingdom alone, over a career spanning six-decades with chart-topping hits that have seen him receive several prestigious awards.

Interim War Tunnels CEO Helen Le Cornu said: "We were super thrilled to have met him, it was a pleasant surprise and something the team will remember."

She added: "He seemed genuinely interested and was going quietly around."

The War Tunnels were recently put up for sale with a minimum price of £5.5m – but it's thought that Sir Cliff was more likely enjoying a 'Summer Holiday' than scouting out a purchase.

The world-famous singer also paid a visit to the Salty Dog bar and bistro in St Aubin.

For hostess Liz Jenner, the encounter was particularly surreal, as she recalled watching Sir Cliff recording some music many years ago.

She explained that he was there for a meal with some friends, and that the arrival was a surprise to her: "I just looked up and he was coming through the door."

"He was lovely," she continued.

"I said, 'I've got a picture of you from 40 years ago!'"
