A flurry of last minute gold medals on the final day of the NatWest Island Games on the Baltic island of Gotland means Jersey has piped Guernsey and finished third in the medals table.
Jersey’s final tally was 85 medals – 29 golds, 21 silvers, and 35 bronzes.
Although Guernsey scoped more medals overall – they had 94 – the table is dictated by the number of golds you get. Guernsey were two behind Jersey.
The Isle of Man topped the table with more than 100 medals – 39 of them gold, and the Faroe Islands secured second spot with 87 medals – 30 golds.
Jersey’s last minute charge for glory was led by gymnast Dan Lee – he secured six medals – five of them golds – in the men’s floor, high bar, parallel bars, rings, and pommel. He also won bronze in the vault.
There was also double gold for tennis player Stuart Parker. He beat Guernsey’s Pat Ogier to take the men’s singles title in the morning, and together with partner Michael Watkins secured the men’s doubles title later in the afternoon.
Jersey’s women’s football team – the reigning champions – had to settle for bronze this time round.
The next games – in 2019 - are in Gibraltar, and the games after that – in 2021 - are in Guernsey.
