Surf’s up! Competitors hope to make a splash in St Ouen showdown

Friday 27 October 2017

Surfing pros from Jersey and Guernsey are hoping to make waves these weekend as they battle in St Ouen’s Bay for the Channel Islands Surfing Championships.

Held tomorrow and Sunday, the competition will see islanders show off their surf prowess in 24 divisions including shortboard, longboard, stand up paddle and bodyboard.

Over 90 people have entered – some juniors, some seniors, others veterans, and some wave-riding experts.

For those who can’t make it to St Ouen to view the commocean, however, there’ll be a live stream of the day’s events.

3Ci International has partnered with the Channel Island’s Surfing Federation to provide a multi-camera webcast via the Jersey Sport TV YouTube Channel so that ocean aficionados can get their dose of vitamin sea in real time.

3Ci Co-Founder and Business Director Phil Bouchard described it as a “really exciting project to be involved in, adding that the team expected interest from spectators not only from Guernsey, but around the world.

“We hope many people tune in to Jersey Sport TV to watch the action and see the amazing surroundings of St Ouen’s Bay,” he commented.

This weekend’s competition comes fresh off the back of a trip to Norway earlier this month where a Channel Islands team performed swimmingly in the Eurosurf Championships.

Jersey’s Gabs Taylor secured a strong third in the Ladies' Longboard section, while there were a set of fifth place positions from Laurie McGregor (Ladies), Matthieu Tweedie (Longboard) and David Speller (Open Bodyboard).

Gus Brewer came 16th in the Open category and Matthieu Tweedie scored 22nd.

Overall, the results placed the Channel Islands in sixth place – just five points behind Wales in fifth.
