Swimarathon 2015 to benefit disability charities

Sunday 23 November 2014

Fundraising for next year's Swimarathon will focus on supporting Islanders with a disability.

The Swimarathon, which will be held at Les Quennevais Sports Centre from 11 to 15 March 2015, will see funds raised divided between specific causes with 25% of the money raised going to 15 charities offering activities for people with disabilities.

Half the money raised will provide respite holidays for Islanders and supporting general community service projects with the remaining 25% donated to Channel Islands Air Search, with whom the Lions Clubs of Jersey and Guernsey have always been closely associated.

President of the Lions Club of Jersey, Lion, the Constable of Grouville, John Le Maistre said: "This is a special time of year for all Lions as we launch the Swimarathon and I am especially delighted to be announcing the recipients of the funds. Jersey is a very generous community and the charities we have identified as beneficiaries exemplify the excellent work undertaken by so many often unseen by the wider community."

One of the beneficiaries next year will be Wetwheels, a Jersey charity offering disabled people the experience of being at sea.

Andy Le Seelleur from the charity said: "Everyone at Wetwheels has worked hard to remove another barrier from the lives of disabled and disadvantaged people by opening up their horizons to include the thrill of the sea. This kind donation has been allocated to a specific educational project that will extend our reach further and develop new learning opportunities."
