The climax of one of this summer’s big spectator sports will hit the roads through town on a workday.
The Town Criterium, the last of the NatWest Island Games cycling events, and tipped to be full of “thrills and spills” will be held on Thursday 2 July.
Local residents and businesses have been warned that roads will be closed over lunchtime for the women’s race and again at dinner time for the men’s race and medal ceremonies.
York Street, Burrard Street, Halkett Place, Hill Street, Mulcaster Street and Conway street will be closed from 12.30pm until 2pm and from 6pm until 8pm.
25 women and 57 men will all be going for gold when they pedal off from the Cenotaph and race round town to the finish line and the organisers hope the event will be well supported by both Islanders and visitors.
St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said: “The Town Criterium will help showcase St Helier to the thousands of visitors who will be here. I hope that holding the event during a week-day lunch break will encourage the many Islanders who work around the route to come out and enjoy what will be an exciting sporting event.
“We are working to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum and hope that people will support the event and their team.”
The Jersey 2015 Director Steve Bailey said: “Staging this event in the centre of town during the week will mean some inconvenience, but I want to assure everyone that we are doing everything we can to minimise the inconvenience while staging an event Jersey can be proud of.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience, and hope that everyone will be understanding. We have given people plenty of time to make arrangements if they expect to be affected.”
