Looking for a career in hospitality?

Wednesday 05 March 2014

A new apprenticeship programme could see more young Islanders following a career in hospitality with a junior management role within four years.

“Journey to Hospitality Management” is for 16-18 year olds and is a joint initiative with Highlands College and the Hospitality Association. It involves one year’s full-time training, followed by paid employment in year two. Apprentices will also have the chance to spend three month’s abroad getting work experience.

The Education Department’s Trackers Apprentice Programme is also offering a new one year foundation programme for 16-18 year olds which will give them customer service skills and qualifications. It includes the ASDAN Community Volunteering Qualification (Level 2), the Prince’s Trust XL Certificate, a Customer Service Level 2 qualification and a customer service work experience placement.

There is now a three-week recruitment period for apprenticeships starting this summer.

Programme Manager Penny Shurmer said: "The Trackers model is based on the apprentice, employer and mentor working together to achieve positive outcomes for everyone.

"We look for motivated individuals who are committed to working hard, both in their place of employment and at their academic studies. Since launching in December 2012, 100% of our apprentices successfully completed their first year, a figure that demonstrates the quality and dedication of everyone involved with the programme.”

Application forms for apprentices and employers can be found at www.gov.je/trackers. The deadline is 5pm on Thursday 20 March.
