Tributes paid to “inspirational” fundraising stone painter

Tributes have been pouring in for an “incredibly talented” and “inspirational” islander, who raised over £9,000 for local charities with her delicate painted rocks.

Rachel Scott-Renouf passed away last Thursday (3 June) after a long battle with cancer.

Her daughter, Lauren, announced the sad news via a post on “Rachel’s painted rocks” Facebook page.

“This beautiful inspirational woman is now at peace, and I hope you will all join me in lighting a candle for her,” she wrote.

Rachel started painting rocks in 2018 after joining the local Facebook group Jersey Painted Rocks, set up Mariana Gouveia Silva to share hidden messages and colourful paintings around Jersey, and then decided to sell the painted pebbles to raise money for the JSPCA’s ‘Save Our Shelter Campaign’.

With the help of her colleagues at Close Finance, she raised over £1,700.

In the following years, Rachel raised a total of £9,000 for various local charities, including various animal rescue charities, Macmillan Jersey, Jersey Cheshire Homes and the Kafunjo Community Project.

Jersey Rescue Dogs shared a heartfelt post about Rachel, praising her talent, heart of gold as well as her dedication to local charities, which she kept supporting even when she was unwell.

“Rachel was well known amongst many for her beautiful painted stones that she auctioned to raise funds for numerous charities of which we were lucky to be one,” they wrote. “An incredibly talented lady who raised over £9,000 through giving her time painting these unique stones. What an incredible achievement!

“A lady who was passionate about animals and even at a time when her health was declining she selflessly continued painting and raising funds for us all. It’s not surprising that Rachel was a 2020 Pride of Jersey finalist as Volunteer/Fundraiser of the Year.

“Rachel, you had a heart of gold and heaven has gained a true Angel. We thank you for being you and all you did for so many.”

Commenting on Lauren’s post, the JSPCA team wrote: “Your mum was a very kind, generous and talented woman and we appreciated all her support so much. Sending love to your whole family at this very sad time.”

Many islanders also shared their condolences in the comments, with many remembering her "kind" and "lovely" nature.

“Your Mum was a brave lady and so kind and talented,” Kay wrote. “I will treasure my pebble she painted for me.”

“Your mum was so many things, not least - selfless, kind, generous, brave, inspirational and, of course, hugely talented,” Julie said. “I will treasure the rocks and boxes I have that Rachel painted.”

“Such a lovely, inspirational lady and a tragic loss,” commented Chris.

“Oh Rachel we will all miss you so much,” Felicity said. “I am happy that such a wonderful talented brave and generous woman has been in my house, a huge example for all. Your eternity will be filled with beauty.”
