Parents remain in hospital following Mont Pinel blast

Monday 01 July 2024

The mother and father who were injured during the Mont Pinel explosion last week remain in hospital – with investigations into the cause of the blast set to begin at the end of this week.

All emergency services were sent to Mont Pinel shortly before 23:00 on Wednesday 26 June due to an "unidentified suspected explosion and structural collapse".

Firefighters rescued two adults and two children from the property in a "time-critical" rescue operation.

The family-of-four was taken to the General Hospital for medical attention, and 19 other residents of the area were displaced.

It was confirmed last week that the two and five-year-old whose bedroom was left exposed when the front wall of their home collapsed were "unharmed".

In an update released this afternoon, the States of Jersey Fire & Rescue Service confirmed that the parents remain in hospital and the family is being supported by the Government.

The statement also confirmed that work has begun to stabilise the impacted property.

The structural support is expected to be installed by the end of this week when investigations into the cause of the explosion will be able to begin.

The Fire Service said: "We would like to express our gratitude to the States of Jersey Police and Honorary Police officers for their hard work and support in manning the cordons thus far and ensuring islanders’ safety."

Over the weekend, displaced residents from the neighbouring properties were escorted back to their homes to collect personal belongings.

The Government is continuing to support those residents, in conjunction with insurance companies.

The cause of the blast is yet to be confirmed.
