Charities' appeal for tins

Local businesses, schoolchildren and religious and community events are being encouraged to help feed the poor in Jersey and Romania.

The Shelter Trust and the Friends of Ecce Homo Trust are holding their Tinathon next week and are appealing for tinned meat, fish, vegetables and fruit.

30,000 tins have been collected for the two charities since the annual event was launched six years ago.

Organiser Michelle Cuthbert said: “Every year the generosity of Jersey people has exceeded our expectations and we extremely grateful for their continuing support and for the support of our sponsors and our dedicated team of volunteers.

“We will be in West’s Centre throughout the day on Friday 16^th May and anyone can bring along tins and drop them off. We will also be operating an office collection scheme in the days running up to the event for those businesses who have arranged their own Tinathon and are asking any firms who want to take advantage of this scheme to let us know in advance so we can make the necessary arrangement.”

Waitrose customers will get the chance to donate a tin or two to the appeal at their in-store ‘FoodBank’ event on Saturday.

The tins need to be in good condition and within the "use by" date.

The Shelter Trust provides accommodation and support for homeless people in Jersey.

The Friends of Ecce Homo Trust is a Jersey registered charity helping the poorest of the poor in Romania. They ship out three or four containers of aid to the country each year which are distributed to needy families, schools and hospitals.
