UK man guilty of assaulting teen he met at Jersey party

Thursday 05 September 2024

A 64-year-old man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a teenager at a party he travelled to Jersey from the UK to attend.

Gordon James Burnett put his arm round the victim, who he didn't know previously, then up her skirt and inside her underwear.

The victim reported the incident on the night, and Burnett was later arrested at his hotel.

He faced a trial at the Royal Court this week.

Following the verdict, Detective Constable Ben Casson from the Public Protection Unit, commented: “I wish to thank the victim in this case for her courage, resilience and determination to see this through.

"At SOJP we recognise how hard it can be for victims to come forward and wish to reassure the public that we, and the services we work alongside, will do everything in our power to support victims of sexual abuse whether or not they wish to pursue a criminal case.”

Burnett was remanded in custody. He will next attend court for sentencing on 18 October.
