Monday 16 January 2017

A new recycling centre - in part built from recycled material - opens to the public today.

The complex at La Collette replaces some of the facilities currently provided at Bellozanne.

In keeping with the department's 'reduce, reuse, recycle' policy a great deal of thought has gone into the centre's construction and running.

As the time-lapse video of the build shows, the steel frame from the old Jersey Potteries building has been incorporated, as have recycled wood, tyres and aggregates. Waste glass has been used in the floor screed.

The new centre is powered by the nearby incinerator at La Collette.

It's estimated the Island produces about 100,000 tonnes of rubbish every year. That's more than double what it was 20 years ago. And, with space becoming ever scarcer the States have been putting added emphasis on recycling.

The contract to manage the new centre has been awarded to the Jersey Employment Trust - a charity that helps Islanders with a disability to find work. JET says it hopes to create more than 20 new jobs.
